Beauty from Chaos
Released on February 4, 1977, Rumours is the eleventh studio album by British-American rock band Fleetwood Mac. The recording sessions took place in the aftermath of multiple relationship breakups among the band members. John and Christine McVie were divorcing, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks were ending their long-term relationship, and Mick Fleetwood was facing his own marital dissolution.
Commercial and Critical Phenomenon
Despite, or perhaps because of, the intense emotional turmoil, the band channeled their pain into incredibly accessible, perfectly crafted pop-rock. The album spent 31 weeks at the top of the US Billboard 200 and won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1978.
Essential Anthems
- Dreams: Written by Stevie Nicks in a studio side room in about 10 minutes, it remains the band's only US number-one hit.
- Go Your Own Way: Lindsey Buckingham's raw, blistering musical kiss-off to Nicks, featuring a driving rhythm and intricate acoustic-electric guitar layering.
- The Chain: The only song credited to all five members of the band, representing the musical bond that held them together despite their personal fracturing.
Lasting Legacy
Rumours defined the California soft rock sound of the late 1970s. Its pristine production by Ken Caillat and Richard Dashut, combined with the three distinct songwriting voices of Nicks, Buckingham, and McVie, created an enduring classic that continually discovers new audiences across generations.
